Installing HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) can be a dangerous job, due to both the weight of units or materials and the tall heights at which they are often installed. This is why using access and lifting equipment is a great idea for safer installations. Here are a few tips to help you safely install HVAC.
Duct lifts (known under various other names such as ductlifts, duct lifters, and material(s) lifters) are one of the most common tools seen on a building site. Like forklifts, they can be used to raise materials to a higher level to aid with installation, replacement or repair.
Just as the requirements for a job may be diverse, duct lifters come in a variety of sizes, with differing maximum heights and load bearings available. They are often manually operated with a crank handle and pulley system that lifts the platform, although others are available that offer motorised operation.
There are several steps you should follow in order to safely install HVAC:
1. What machine do you need to lift your HVAC?
Calculate the weight of the load that will be lifted, which will then help you determine the kind of lifter you will require. In addition to weight, you should also look at the dimensions of the load, as duct lifts come in a variety of sizes, with different platforms (either specialised forks or a flat surface on which the item sits). These HVAC lifters are designed to fit through a standard doorway so you can use them on any site you require it on.
2. Hazards
Before starting work, check the area for any hazards that could affect your ability to work, such as an insecure or wet floor, obstructions overhead, or electricity cables. Doing this work beforehand will help to limit the chances of accidents later. Assess hazards as per your workplace’s OH&S regulations.
3. Protective gear
Make sure you are wearing protective gear such as a helmet and eye goggles, in case of an accident. If you are replacing HVAC using equipment on any site, always refer to your site’s safety requirements.
4. Secure the machine and load
If the duct lift has wheels or supports that can be secured to prevent the device from moving, these should be locked, which is especially important for large or heavy items. The load will also need to be secured to the duct lift tynes as per the OH&S standards to ensure that it doesn’t move around whilst it’s being raised.
